TCDD can reprogram those epigenetic controls, with consequences that might appear long after the chemical has been cleared from the body. Supporting evidence comes from the lab of Alvaro Puga, a molecular biologist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, who gave pregnant animal models TCDD and found that the offspring were born with nonlethal heart defects that became dangerous only when the animals reached adulthood.
